i purchased a jd 4010 diesel which had been sitting outside for a year or more, was not running.i removed the head and checked the cyl. and pistons which had been resleeved to 4020,everthing looked good,so i replaced head and torqued to specs.after i bleed the injection sys. i tried to crank and was not getting fuel to injection pump,so i had the injection pump rebuilt and the injectors i disasembled and cleaned per the i&t shop manual.still no start,so i tried a little starting fluid and there was some firing on some cylinders.i dont know how to check the injectors. the injection pump was set with the n0. 1 cyl. on tdc with timeing marks aligned in inj. pump window.also i did not remove the pan to check the bottom side, but i have compression and walves are working and set to specs. i would appreciate any help and any suggestions

thanks john king

Does the injection pump have a speed advance kit installed in it?The tag should end with 1AF if it has the kit installed and the proper timing is 8 degrees BTDC.If the flywheel isn't marked then use 1/2 of the width of the pump timing window as a measure to scribe a line at 8 degrees since the width of the timing window is exactly 4 degrees wide on the flywheel.
If the pump is the old non advanced time pump then the proper timing is 14 degrees BTDC

The pump should be timed 8 degrees btdc. How did you reset the opening presure on the injectors after you cleaned them?

thanks guys for the info, one thing i failed to mention is when i told the pump rebuilder the engine had been resleeved to 4020, he said he would set the pump to 4020 specs. so do i still set the pump to 8 degrees btdc or 14 btdc or tdc.also the pump serial does not end in 1 af so it does not have speed advance kit .

If it is the original load advance pump, 14 degrees
If up dated original, to add speed advance, 8 degrees
If somebody installed a 4020 pump, probably 0 degree
Can you post the numbers on the pump? We can see which pump you have, and where it times. That is if the tag on the pump is right.

That pump no. comes up as the up dated pump, with the speed advance kit installed. It static times at 8 degrees before top dead center. This assumes that all correct parts were installed, when it was rebuilt.

I would try pull starting the tractor. It maybe the rings are dried out, and every thing needs to get lubricated after sitting for a long time. Pull start in eighth gear. DON'T pull it over fifty feet without the engine turning over, or the shift lever in TOW position.

i will set the timing at 8 degrees btdc and give it a try. the engine turns fine with the starter. i set the timeing with the first cyl. next to the radiator, as the # 1 cyl., i hope this is right.
also is it possible to get the timeing 180 degrees off by pulling the pump drive shaft out and turning it around. some one said this might be the problem, since the had the same problem i have.

Yes, it is possible to get 180 out. If you pull the drive shaft out of the pump, there is a dot on the end of the shaft, and a dot on the rotor shaft in the pump. The dots have to be lined with each other. The tang on the engine end of the shaft is off set and will only go one way.
