changed the oil & filter on my 49 H last night. The new rubber gasket is smaller the the ring it fits in. When I try to put in and stretch it the rubber will roll over instead of being in flat. Any hints to get it in right?

49jdh,
Out of curiosity, what brand and model number of filter are you using? The current John Deere filter (AH1082R) doesn"t come with a gasket (just picked one up today, $5.50 at my local dealer.) The gasket is available as a separate part. I haven"t replaced my gasket for years and years because it"s hard to dig out and because it"s so protected. There"s really no reason to replace it, unless it became damaged somehow.

Don't have any experience with an H, but for my A all the filters I have bought have had two rubber gaskets. Maybe the correct size is missing in your package. Maybe a trip back to where you bought it and check out another box, or different brand.
