Value question ~ JD G

I have a friend that is thinking about selling his John Deere G. I think the year is a 1951, and it is a high crop. I haven't seen any others like this. Runs well, no smoke. Tires are in fair condition, and it will need a paint job to get it looking like it once was. I think someone took a brush to it...:(
What you think the value of this tractor would be? Just in general. I know it depends on the area. Thanks for you help. Angie :)

What would the serial number read? Would it say: John Deere Model GH? of G High-Crop? Or, just be G and the number?

Angie,
The serial number tag should read JOHN DEERE MODEL G TRACTOR and then the serial number. You will have to get that number verified by the Two-Cylinder club. It costs $15.00 if you are a member (not sure how much for non-members), but for an EXTREMELY high value tractor like this you should spend the money to have the serial number verified. It is a notarized document of authenticity for your tractor.

That's a good question, and one I'm not sure of the answer. I can look in my "Styled Letter Series" book tonight, but someone will likely answer your question before then. The odds are pretty poor that it's a "faked" "G" Hi-Crop, but it's still possible. The Two-Cylinder Club can do serial-number research (for a small fee) and provide you with some info on the tractor, if the tag is intact and readable.

If it is a true G high crop with serial number tag then the correct response is "If you have to ask, you can't afford it".

It's a real-deal Hi-Crop, as in it looks pretty much like this tractor - Link but is a "G"? If it's a "G" Hi-Crop, the sky is the limit in value, especially if it has a good serial number tag. They only built a few hundred of them to begin with, and many were exported, so they're pretty rare here in the States. Like less than 100 rare. No one can predict the results of an auction, but $50,000 (yes, fifty thousand) would probably just be a starting point if it's a verifiable "G" Hi-Crop with a good tag.
