Can someone tell me if the water temp gauge on a 435 diesel is electric or mechanical? I do not have the tractor in front of me right now and need to know. I know the oil pressure is electric. Thanks.

Electric. If you don't have oil pressure the oil and temp gauges won't work. Do you have the JD manual that shows the entire setup?

I do have the manual, but am in the middle of a move and they are at my old house and tractor is at the new house. I just noticed the oil pressure was bouncing and the electric sending unit is leaking pretty good. The water temp is also bouncing around like crazy now. Are you saying these two are related? This would make me feel a lot better as I thought maybe I was having a cooling problem in this 100 degree weather we are having. Thanks.

The oil operated electrical switch went erratic than failed open last winter on my 435. On occassion a tap to the switch would get the contacts to make a little better.

The temp gauge is electric and is impossible to obtain exact original from Deere as they will sub up to the later model style. Quite easy to install a black face mechanical though that is closer to the original than the Deere electric replacement.
