HELP!!! 720 diesel #1 cylinder runs cold

I have a 1958 720 dieel C.E. start. The diesel engine starts, runs well, and doesn't sound as if it has a miss. However, the exhaust manifold never heats up nearests the #1 cylinder. I can place my hand on the exhaust manifold where the manifold mounts to the cylinder head on the #1 side of the engine. Even after the tractor has been running at fast idle for a half hour or more. The other half of the exhaust manifold(#2 side of engine where exhaust gasses from both cylinders combine before being sent up the pipe to the muffler) becomes hot enough that I can't place my hand on that half of the manifold just minutes after startup. Help!!! What might I be able to do, short of tearing down the engine, to diagnose the problem? Any ideas out there fellow tractor enthusiasts?

Take off the pump compartment cover, and check the timing of the pumps, the timing could be retarded or advanced and cause this problem, you'll have to line up the marks on the flywheel and the side cover for each pump, make sure you're on compression instead of exhaust, and INJ instead of TDC on the flywheel.

Take out the injector on that side (assuming you dont find a loose or broken line) turn it around, and hook the line up to it again. Use the decompression, and turn the engine over with the starting engine. Watch the spray pattern. If it is spraying well, its a pump, if not have the injectore rebuilt. And just because the injector is bad, doesn't meen the pump isnt. On my 56 70, it was both the pump and injector.

A friend had the same problem on his 730D. The problem was the line running from the injector pump to the injector had cracked and was leaking fuel into the crankcase. He found this when the tractor "gained" almost a gallon of motor oil in one weekend of working. Its not hard to get to, you will need to pull off the tappet cover and the top cover over the injectors. These lines like to break off right at the nut so you'll have to take the line off to see it. The parts are still available from Deere. Hope this helps!

Have you had it long?Did it always run like this since you got it? Or did this just start? You could take the cover off the top of the block and loosen the #1 injector line with it running this will act like pulling off a spark plug wire it should miss or change the sound

I am sorry. I can't help you with your problem, but I am looking for something. I am looking for new connecting rod nuts for 720 Diesel. If you could help me I would be very happy. Thank you.
