where do I start with this tractor? Gear box won't shift over to the low side, and not started in 2 yrs. seat ,radiator grill, lights. Do I change it from 2 6 volt to a 12 system. Some work I can do myself most will have to be out-sourced I don't have many tools!! I can do the parts running etc. How do I pick some one who knows what they are doing?? What is best way to do all this I got this from grandfathers estate. I'd like it to be a working and show quality tractor
Oh ya clutch pully brake is worn with grooves they didn't replace pads. are parts easy to get for this model. They also did a lousy job with some green paint on fender & grill. Yes these are rookie ??? that's who I am..

Are you familiar with the 2-Cylinder Club? They put out a magazine every 2 months that periodically lists members of a Technical Council which is club members who are particularly knowledgeable about many aspects of repairing and restoring these older John Deeres. The magazine also lists people who do complete restorations for originality (but that is spendy!). The Technical Council guys answer questions for free. I can truly say they are great. I've asked a few questions of them and they give GOOD answers. The 2-Cylinder Club has a web site, www.two-cylinder.com

Hi JDrookie, congrats. on the tractor. Sounds like you got a little work ahead of you. The two 6v batteries will give you more cranking amps than 1 12v will, if hooked in series. If you can find someone knowledgeable on these to give you some insite as you go, it would be a lot cheaper to do as much as you can yourself. I do some restoration for folks myself. I charge much less than normal shop rate, but restoration runs into a lot of time if your into originality. These are a pretty simple tractor to work on. Your biggest ingredent will be time. Good Luck!! Don

If you have any mechanical sence at all do not be scared of your tractor. I am doing my first 2 cyl project right now. I have 70 hrs in it myself and so far my hired out labor has cost me a 12 pack of labatts! Make sure you are committed to seeing the project through because it will take longer and cost more than you expect. Ask questions and be patient! Good luck, Mike
