Been looking around a while for sickle bar mower. Can someone explain to me the difference between the #5 and #8 JD mower? I have come across a few but they are always about 1000 miles away. I'll just keep waiting and maybe one will go up for sale closer by.

able, all are good mowers if you can get one in good shape. that 50 with a 3 point hitch will run even a 350 jd and that is a top of the line. i don't like the wobble drive on a 350 so went new holland 451. if you do some looking, ebay too, you should find one fairly cheap. most ware parts are easily available.

I looked at a 350 awhile back and I didn't like the lift mechanism, and when the tractor hit a bump it would shake and bounce. I'm sure the 350 is a good mower, but not what I am looking for. When I run across one at a reasonable distance I will buy it. Just need advice from someone that has owned one. Very little hay grown around here so finding one locally will be almost immpossible.

able, yes the lift was simpler on a new holland 451. what i would look for in a mower 1. any broken castings 2. the cutter bar any twists or bends, condition of fingers, plates, heel etc. 3. its complete and has knives. 4. check all bushing and cutter bar lead. some areas sickles are still a dime a dozen you may have to travle a bit.

Most of the mowers I have seen up for sale seem to be in good condition, only a few that maybe that could use an overhaul. Just wish they won't so far away. I might just have to plan on a vacation pulling my trailer. I put an ad out in the classifieds this morning and also our local monthly ag paper. Just have to wait and see what happens. Will be trying to get a #38. Might wind up in Ia at Farmer Jacks place. Who knows.

The 8 replace the number 5. It had a better frame setup for the breakaway, better pto shaft and shield, internal slip clutch, moved the flywheel to the rear of the chain case to help prevent seal failure, increased knife speed to allow faster mowing, etc.

The #38 replaced the 8 and had a belt driver versus the chain drive. no more seals to fail and leak gear lube. Where are you located as I have 2 #38's I am looking to sell?

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I am located in NC. I have a 50 thats why I want the 5 or 8 because it is semi-mounted. Is the 38 a semi-mount simular to the 5 and 8? 5 or 6 hundred miles will be about my limit for going after one. I believe the semi-mount or a trailer type would work behind this tractor better than one being 3 pt. mounted.

5, 8, 38 semi-mount
9, 39, 350 3 point mount
11, 37, 450 trailing
10, 50, 250 mid mount
47 is a mid mount for a dubuque series
I believe the 7 was either for the L or M

I am in IA, so I am a bit for to help you directly. I would stick with the semi-mount with your 50. From design a reverse order would be my preference.

Farmer Jack thats the information I have needed the whole time. My guess is about a 1000 miles to Ia.A quick estimate of fuel and hotel rooms would run about $500. Might be the best for me to wait and see if one turns up closer by,if not I will try to get back in touch with you.
