WE are rebuilding the power steering on our 70D. Does anyone know if the thrust bearing that fits in the quill down at the end of the spindle should be packed with grease or does it just need to be oiled. When we disassembled, the bearing appeared to have oil in it and not grease. However it probably has never been rebuilt and the grease may be just thinned. Thanks for any help.

Pack it with grease. Then every ? 1000 hrs or so you remove the front grille remove a little 1/8" pipe plug in the side of the lower section, screw in a grease fitting and pump some grease in it and it drops down onto the bearing. Not very handi so most may of never been done.

Mike:

Right on about packing it with grease, and my suggestion is to use the very best grease you can find, because that fitting is useless. I calculated that it would take nearly three tubes of grease to fill that cavity, and then you're just giving dirt something to stick to. It might have worked if they had attached a tube to direct the lube toward the bearing, but as it is, it just makes you feel good.

I would just pack it with really high-quality grease and forget it after that. My $.02, but others have written about that bearing with the same remedy.
