Any insight on how to easily remove the thrust bearing on a 1961 4010 diesel? The manual is clear as mud. Want to do it the easiest/safest way as to not mess something else up! Thanks.

drain the oil, pull the filter can remove 2 bolts and replace with 3 inch bolts and then remove the rest of the bolts, the pan might half to be pryed off, the 2 longer bolts you put in before and there to catch the pan. unbolt the main cap bolts and use 2 bars in the holes and move the cap, this cap is tight and hard to get off, after cap is off [ don't let it drop on your head ] i take a thin screw driver and push the upper half as far as i can then find a screw that won't quite fit in the oil hole in the crank but will catch the bearing when i turn the crank then i just roll the bearing out and replace it with a new one, the upper half has an oil hole and the bottom half doesn't. the 2 notches in the bearings go together the number in cap is on the opposit side and the cam shaft see the numbers on the other caps, tha is the way the cap goes, torque the main to 150LBS and the hard part is over, i use two 3/8 bolts with there heads cut off screw into the block and helps me line up the pan while i install the rest of the bolts. your crank is probley worn out and the new bearing won't do much good .. good luck, PS i do this job buy my self but you should have help the pan is heavy

Are you talking the main bearing?I use an old kitchen table knife. It takes the shape of the block and will not hurt the crank.Just tap it with a small hammer. Another method some people use is to put a rivet or small bolt in the oil hole and turn the crank over by hand.It will roll the bearing right out.

Use a brass rivet to prevent scratching the crank or the bearing bore!
