I have a 72 3020 gas when I pull it hard for more than about 30 seconds or so it begins to gallop, coughing black smoke and back firing. I have rebuilt the carb {zenith} and had experts rebuild it. I've replaced gas and air filters, fuel pump, and even overhauled engine, but no difference. this tractor has about 2000 actual hours and has been very well taken care of. any advice on this one I would apreciate. thanks

I used to do smog checks and after thinking of this one (you have checked a lot) and this seems to be a problem child lets see: If it is putting out black smoke then it is either getting too much fuel, or not firing it every time. I would maybe suspect a bad mag or ignition system (not familar with the model) without actually hearing or seeing the tractor. You might try turning off the fuel selector and then run it until it runs out of fuel. If it smooths out and runs good just before it runs out of fuel then it is most likely a bad carburetor and flooding the engine when you open the throttle. If it never smooths out then you have pretty much eliminated the carburetor and it's time to look at the ignition system, spark advance system, etc. You may have something simple like a crossfire in the cap if it has one. The backfiring makes me think it might be firing the plugs too soon. We know they can back fire and "pop" when they run too lean also but with the black smoke it is not too lean. Fuel, fire , and air as you know is what it take to run an engine correctly. If the problem is not mechanical (valves, etc. being the air part or plugged intake which you have checked) and you run it with the fuel off and it runs bad until it runs out of fuel, then I believe you have eliminated all but the ignition system. Good luck and PLEASE let me know what you find as these real hard ones can drive us crazy. Wayne

I've set the carb leaner and richer but it doesn't seam to make any difference. Itis pretty obvious that the previous owner had the same problem by the looks of things. other than this problem it starts great and is deffinately the favorite tractor on the farm. As the tractor is lugging it seams to not be able to burn all the fuel that it is being fed, thus over loading with gas causing it to choke. I tend to think that it is a carb problem because it is worse after it gets warmed up, but I can't find another one to switch with to check it. If you have any more questions please ask, we'll figure it out some how

Well lets try again how about the governor have you checked the flyweights and pins? Did you look into the dist. sometimes the mechanical advance will freeze up. You will have to remove the point plate to see.

Well if it is blowing black smoke it's getting plenty of fuel or it is flooding, but it sounds to me like it may have a plugged air cleaner or air stack or collasping intake hose.Muddobbers will stopup the air stacks
