Bearings wobble in blocks - what is wrong?

I have a Tox-o-wick batch dryer (500 bushel) which drives off of a tractor PTO. The PTO drives a three foot 1 1/2 (approx) inch diameter shaft back in underneath of the dryer. The shaft runs the fan, recirculating auger, the stirring arms and the loading augers. These components are all ran by belts. The shaft is supported on each end by bearings supported in bearing holders. The bearing comes out of the holder by turning the bearing sideways. My question is when you turn the shaft slowly you can see both bearings move in and out ever so slightly at the top. Is this caused by a bent shaft? Bad bearings? Worn bearing holders? Improper aliment? If the shaft is slightly bent can a machine shop straighten it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Is the shaft retained to the bearings with lock collers? if they are overtightened they can and will bend the shaft, regardless of the size of the shaft. You might loosen them and rotate to see if it straightends out. just a thought. don

Andy, It does sound like a bent shaft. You might also check it out well to make sure no bolts are cracked or broke or welds broken on any bearing holder brackets allowing slack. Could be worn holders or bearings like you said too. Will be hard to straighten a shaft that large but suppose someone can do it or just replace it. If you can get under there place something under near the shaft or even tape or tie a piece of chalk on it barely touching in the middle while someeone turns it by hand to get an idea of how bent it could be. When a load is thrown on something too fast shafts can bend. Seen it a lot on combines, feedtrucks, & grinders.
