JD-40S timing issues?

Hi folks,

What is the required points gap and timing info, and how do I set it? (Ideally without a strobe.)

I've been working on an old 40S that has been having problems starting etc. (though it worked once it was going). Thought for a while it was gas, but cleaned the whole thing out. Then changed spark plugs and cleaned points, and it started, but fired very irregularly. Moving the throttle, I could find one or two locations in which it would fire enough times (half, maybe) to get the tractor moving, but any steep incline or PTO work would shift the rhythm of firing and I'd have to scramble to shift the throttle to the right place or the engine would cut out.

This leads me to think the problem is with the timing. Since it seems to have got worse since cleaning the points, I suspect it may the points gap; or it might be the timing in general.

Further ideas? This board has been incredibly helpful so far, so deep thanks in advance.

Be well,
John

I suspect you've got carb problems if you can move the throttle and get response out of your tractor.

I agree, sounds like gas problems. Open up the "L" shaped screw on the bottom of the carb. This is the load needle, to adjust it correctly: have throttle at wide open position, then screw it IN until engine sputters, then back it OUT one turn. This should put it close. According to how heavy you work the engine, you may have to back it out some more. Just remember, IN makes less black smoke, OUT makes more.

I suspect a fuel flow problem. Check by taking out the plug in the bottom of the carb. You should get a pencil sized flow for at least a minute. Anything less ans start checking for blockages. The easiest place to start is to take of the line at the bowl, if good there then suspect the filter in the inlet elbow. if not good there, then check the inlet from the take. They clog with crap from the tank and plug. You can blow it out with air to verify and temporarily clean it.
