How do I tell if a Model A is a 6 Volt, or a 12V?

Is there any way to tell by S/N, or other means to tell if a Model A is a 6 or 12 Volt system?

Maybe someone will correct me but if you sit on the battery box it is 12 volt (actually two 6's). If the battery is in front of the dash in the hood it is 6.

As suggested earlier a 12 volt conversion would also be a good idea.

Jt-
You are correct. The seat/battery box was introduced with s#584000 (12 volt). If the battery is in the hood w/slant dash it is 6 volt.

Model A SN 584000-up (late A with pressed frame) are 12 volt. Prior to that, the slant dash A were 6 volt.

Andy, if you dont know n have to ask, it must not have a battery right??? Some of the early A's were 6 volt BUTTTTT T if youre starting from scratch and it has no battery, I would make it 12 volt regardless as they can be hard to start especially in winter at 6 volts. I have used 6 volt generators to charge at 12 volts simply by using a 12 volt Voltage Regulator. Its a mag ignition I assume so that dont make any difference, all thats different is the lights n battery and the Gen and VR (or cutout relay n switch) and you can use the 6 volt starter if thats what it is at 12 volts.
