My 4020 syncro, when in 8th and running at least 3/4 throttle, will all of a sudden lose all power and nearly stall then quickly reaccelerate back up to full throttle. When your in the field it won't do that, unless your going down a hill. It's very frustrating trying to transport the darn thing, because you will go from 20mph to 5mph and back to 20mph in about a 5 second period. I have replaced and bled the fuel filters and also have blown out every gas line I could find. What could I be looking at here? thank you!

Inside the pump there is a rubber cushion ring that drives the governer weight retainer . These fail and break apart and will get in the governer linkage causing it to bind up. The only way to know is to remove the pump cover and observe the pieces of rubber. The pump will have to be torn apart to replace it. when these start to break the tractor will sometimes "flutter" when in road gear and surge a couple hundred rpm.

Your injection pump is in need of a rebuild. It could be the metering valve or something more serious. Are you using the Standedyne additive in the fuel or using at least 2% soy diesel? How long since the last pump rebuild?

Governor was checked less than a year ago by some of the top JD mechanics in Ohio and they said it was in good shape. Never know though thanks for the suggestion.

Haha I'm not sorry it's a diesel, its the best tractor we've ever had (15,000 hrs+) I just didn't clarify if it was gas or diesel
