How do you change the distributor side bearing on the governor shaft that's on the main shaft-----Do you have to remove it from the weight side,or do you have to pull the collar that the distr.sets into? Thanks Jim.

Sorry,Clooney...It's a 47A---I had roberts do the camshaft---and after running the tractor, oil was oozing from the gasket at the base of the governer--so i went to remove the governor today and found metal chips--looks like the fan shaft gear didn't quite line up right--i did change the flywheel side bearing assembly when it was off befor---because it was falling apart---now i took everything apart and cleaned up the governor assembly--would like to change the distributor side bearing---i tried to pull the gear on the distr. side but it didn't go---i just used a gear puller and not the press,yet...I see the shaft has 2 lips on the shaft 2 keys under the drive flange.. Thanks Jim

Jim, I usually use a bearing separator & arbor press then pull the mag drive flange [sometimes a little heat is needed] ,, then heat the R/H bearing inner race, then press the big gear off that side bearing & all .. I suppose you could press that gear all the way across & off the other side but you really don't want to press it any farther than you have to or you risk enlarging the center gear hole..

~Take a close look at the R/H bearing bore in the governor case as those tend to wear from the R/H bearing spinning in the case.. If you find excessive case wear post back or E-Mail me as there is a way to cheat & have the new bearing ride in a different place..

Clooney----Wont the heat reak havic with the spring on the mag.flange? the shaft is under the spring and retainer, the end of the flange is open. or will the heat disapate to the rest of the shaft enough to let it come free? I'll look tomarrow and check the housing to see what kind of wear there is.. Thanks---Jim

Jim, yes, keep the heat off the spring.. Don't use much heat & put the bearing separator on first then keep the heat on the part that sticks out above that.. Try without heat first sometimes they will come right apart..
