I have an old 1959 JD 45. It has a 4 cylinder Hercules gas engine. I don't know the hp...45? maybe. These machines will do anything the 100000+ dollar outfits do...that is...you can harvest your crop. not so fast---NO COMPUTERS---whoa! You may have a problem with some of the parts but there are still a few good machine shops where you /for a price/ can get them made.

I have the sales Lit for the 45 dated 1967 and in there they list the engine as a John Deere engine at 59HP at 2500 engine RPM's with 180 cu in. They also state the a diesel was availible for the 55. But the 45 is just listed as a gas. I get FARM SHOW and in there, there are many stories of what guys had done with old worn out combines. They strip all the grain stuff and will put on everything from a snow blower, to loaders.

Is that a square-back 45, Mike? They all had JD engines. The Herc's were only in early round-backs.

Yes they are the square backs. The booklet covers the 45 55 95 and 105. I may have something on the round backs, but would have to dig deeper. My responce was more to give ideas of what to do with a worn out combine. Some of the stuff that those guys have done is really neat.

Andy:

They were 4 cylinder, gas only. Can't remember the displacement....probably around 125-140 or so.

I think they were pretty decent. I think our '64 45 Roundback had a JD engine.

I think our neighbor's 45 had a Hercules on it, and it always ran well. A little under powered when he tried a corn head on it, but a 45 tended to plug up the separator before the head anyway.

I would think you could still get parts, but depending on what you are going to use it for, it might be pricey compared to what other power plants you could find. You can buy a whole combine often times for very little.

I've thought about using a combine engine to build a back-up generator unit.
