I have a A JD with a wico C mag. The coil has went dead and I need to run it right away. I have heard of these things being converted to a distributor type by using a external auto coil. What all needs to be done to make this work?

Jon, On the Wico C its easier to convert as far as the external coil part is concerned, cuz all you have to do is use a coil wire from the external coils high voltage tower output down to the high voltage input on the outer Wico C cap where its own coil wire (which you remove) would have plugged in. HOWEVER since it dont have that external kill switch stud like most Wico X Mags, its a lil harder to get access to the points.

When you convert, all youre doing is using the internal mag points to open/close (switch) the coils current so it will fire when the points break open on high cam and distribute the spark to the correct plug wire terminal. You simply install an ON/OFF dash SPST toggle or push/pull ignition switch with its high input fed (16 gauge wire will suffice) from the ammeters load terminal and its switched output down to the coils high input lil primary terminal. Thennnnn the coils other low output terminal wires to the points inside the Mag where it gets its ground when the points are closed.

On that Wico C you would have to drill a small hole and run a wire (16 gauge would suffice)through it all silicone sealed and attach it to the points terminal (remove the old coil n wires to the points etc.) The condensor which is also wired to the points terminal remains in place n wired.

Now once installed n timed right and if wired right when the points break open on high cam the coil will fire and the Wico will route the spark to the correct plug.

Franky I think its not a good way to go and I would prefer to convert to a Delco Distributor or else replace the coil in your mag. They arent all that expensive and are readily available ya know.

You have to match the coil voltage to your tractor voltage also either from the correct coil or a series ballast resistor in cases where uou use a 6 volt coil on a 12 volt tractor.

Pull your old coil out,you will need a battery, coil, wire, spark plug wire. You will need to run a wire from the - term. on the coil if your running - ground or + if + ground hook it to the screw where condenser wire hooks on the points. You may need to drill a hole in the cap.Hook the other term.to your battery source be a good idea to put in a switch so you can shut it off. Since you have a C mag. hooking up the plug wire is easy just shove one end in your new coil and the other in mag. cap. Should be good to go.
