When driving my JD B the right rear wheel will stop turning and lock up solid like the brake is applied. This happen even more often if it is on any type of a side hill, but at times on flat ground. I can tell if it is the brake as it seems to work fine or in the rear end. After it locks up if I release the clutch and reapply the clutch it will drive normal until this happens again then disengage the clutch and reapply it and so on. No noises or clunks, only happens in forward gears, high and low. Brake works ok and the other wheel keeps spinning when the right locks up. Thanks for any ideas.

Something to check. The next time it happens, stop right there, (don't even backup), and carefully remove the righthand brake. Look in at the bullgear with a flashlight and see if there might be a broken tooth or something laying in the teeth of the bullgear. If your lucky, you can get it from there. Just a thought.

Don't ask how I know this! Good Luck Don

I think DP is right.

By now most of you have heard about how our '48 "A" cracked a brake pinion gear, half of which stayed meshed with the bull gear, and when it came around it broke the right hand side differential bearing and seat clear out of the main case, scrapping the tractor.

I would pull the brake unit, jack up the right side and turn that wheel s-l-o-w-l-y, watching with a flashlight to see if I couldn't see something stuck in the teeth. If not, it might just be a brake with very worn bushings that is crabbing into a bind every now and then.

Either way, it needs fixed before something serious happens.

Others on here probably have more experience but the first thing I would suspect is the differential.

The problem has to be at the differential or back. If it was a broken tooth you would probably hear it. I would check the differential bearings and the bevel/spur pinion for the right wheel.

Pull the transmission top cover and you should be able to reach in with a bar. See if you have excessive play in the bearings and gears.

It would also be easy to pull the right brake to inspect those gears and the bull gear.

And other thought, the rear axle bearings could be worn causing it to bind. Jack the right side up by the housing and with a long bar and block see if you can get any up and down movement in the axle.

Be careful, if it is binding that hard it could end up breaking some teeth.

The first thing I thought of was a tooth was broken off and the piece was getting picked up by the bull gear. But that wouldn"t be isolated to the right side.

Something to think about until someone with more experience provides some input.

This is just a guess mind you. You may have a bearing going bad some where in that side.
