I am looking for something bigger than my 4440. I dragged my feet too long on a 8430 which was sharp last fall. I found a nice 4555MFWD which I am leaning towords but am also considering a 8650 and an 8440. Why do the 30/40/50 series 4x4's get such a bad rap. I know they are not cheap to work on. Are they just under built?

By and large, the "84" versions of the 30/40/50-series 4wds seem to be the best, what with having the 6466 engine. The 466 Deere engine is simply a better engine overall the than the 531/691, even though they're very similar in design and construction. I've been around two 8450s. One owned by my grandpa and uncle. It has around 5000 hours. It was used for heavy-tillage for several years, but since they went to mostly no-till, it pretty much just runs the grain cart and does a little tillage now and then. Only problems have been a couple of head gaskets, which isn't the tractor's fault as that engine could have just as easily ended up in a 4850, a crack in the main hyraulic pump - once again, could have happened in a row-crop, and a snap-ring on the PTO shaft coming off, which wasn't a big deal. That said, the 4555 is a darn good tractor, and more versatile than a 4wd. With MFWD, you'll get comparable drawbar performance to an 8440, if not a little more, as there is much less weight to move with similar engine horsepower. The 4555 is probably quite a few more dollars, correct? For general farm work where a full 4wd isn't needed, I'd go after the 4555.

The engine is part of the frame on the 4wds, the engine block can't take any twisting. The 86's are worse than the 84's on going bad. Just put in a clutch and engine on a 8440 and the bill was around $17000. That included all the service calls on it too for hydrulic problems. I would go with the 4555 anyday.

I put over 12,000 hours on an 8630, with no problems. I think the some of the negatives about these machines was more hype than anything else, and with a little common sense, and regular oil changes, many of them lived a long and healthy life.

Right on, Bob! We ran an 8630 for about ten years and the only problems we had with it were caused by operator abuse and lack of common sense. Those tractors are not cheap work on, but then again, if you have to put an engine, tranny, clutch, etc. in any tractor that size, it aint gonna be cheap.
