Does any one have a wiring diagram and parts list to up grade my JD420T to a 12 volt system?

Ron, if you want to go to an alternator buy a one wire type (internal regulator), change battery to negative ground, change all bulbs to 12v, reverse leads on ammeter, and add a dropping resister to coil as JohnT suggested. Starter is ok as is. I've done this and it works well, but now wish I had stayed with six volt system these tractors start so easily. SteveA

Ya. I have keep mine all 6 volt and the biggest problems are trying to get a good battery that last more than 3 years and doesn't leak all over. I now have a AC DELCO battery that has held up very well, but in the future I might spend the extra and buy an OPTIMA.

What is happening to the 6V system that is prompting the change?

Ron, the wiring dont change much.

You will need a 12 volt battery.

You can get a new 12 volt Generator and Voltage Regulator or else just do as I have done and use the old Gen but just change to a 12 volt VR.

You will need to EITHER change to a full 12 volt rated coil OR ELSE add a voltage dropping ballast resistor (around 1.5 to 1.85 ohms at 25 watts) in series between the Ignition switches IGN output down to the coil. It will drop 6 volts leaving 6 across the coil.

Use existign starter

Change any light bulbs to 12 volters.

Hook her up n polarize her n see what happens
