Hi Guys--need a little help.I know you are all probably blue in the face answering 4020 timing/injector problems but here goes.Got this 66 4020 diesel ps lately.Starts real easy, good oil pressure, engine rebuilt about 10 years ago and has not worked much since.A Lot of blue smoke.Actually a lot of every colour smoke.White on start up and runs rough for a minute--no coolant loss.Black smoke at the thought of work, AND ENOUGH BLUE SMOKE TO BLOCK OUT THE CLOUD ON A SUNNY DAY.When I got it their was too much oil in the sump but their was no diesel dilution.Am I looking at a timing/injection problem.Any help would be great as I am Here in Ireland where their were very few 4020's and the guys that repaired them at the time are nearly all dead and the younger guys never heard of a 4020.
Regards,John.
PS--The crankshaft has never been touched in it.It got rings once and then liners, pistons and rings 10 years ago.It finds it hard going to pull itself along in 8th gear without black smoking real bad. Have changed all the oils and filters including the air.

white is moisture (cool combustion chamber, condensation of moisture in the air on cold cylinder walls)
black is unburned fuel (putting it in faster than it can burn it.....or in droplets rather than a fine mist that will explode)
Blue is crankcase oil (usually worn rings).

If this tractor has been sitting for a long time it may be that it just needs limbering up. A good solvent in the fuel and a good dose of castor oil (naw just kidding) down the air intake.

Marvel Mystery Oil. Good solvent. Red can. Read directions. Good place to start.

In the fuel, don't skimp.

Then take it out and run heck out of it.

Mark

One thing that can make a difference is blocking off the crankcase ventilator pump. Its located at the left front of the engine.I used to use a ball bearing that would just fit inside the flare fitting to block the line with.Always had to block them off when I installed M&W blowers. If there is any restriction at all in the air cleaner like Bob spoke about, the engine will pull crankcase oil out of the ventilator pump and into the intake manifold. The other thing I would suggest you do is to work tthe engine hard for a while.Could be some sticky rings from infrequent use especially if it has Keystone rings.Ordinarily faulty injection timing won't cause that much excess smoke.Good luck, bob

Which pipe will I block on the Vent pump?

Bob---I take off the pipe coming from the aircleaner and I did notice that the inside of the intake manifold was very black with oily deposits. Now the crankcase breather was rerouted into this intake before the engine was redone and never put back, and their is very little blowby now!

Have you completely checked over the air intake system to be sure a critter hasn't built a nest somewhere, or that there is not some other damage or restriction?
