Looking to buy a used John Deere LX288 it has a 18HP V-Twin motor. The seller said it is a couple of years old. The latest model on JD site has a ammeter & a cup holder which this one doesn't. I would like to know how long has JD been using the 18HP V-Twin in THe LX288. This will give me a good idea of age range.

There is an LX288 and it replaced the LX188 as top-of-the-line when they revamped the series. I would check the serial # on the engine and make sure it's a newer Kaw motor with the steel camshaft gear. The early 18HP motors has a plastic gear that would fail. If the motor is the newer one, you have no concerns. I had an LX188 for several years, it was a good lawn tractor.

I am pretty sure they DO make a LX288. I have an LX277 mower that is a 2001 model that I bought used. The 277 is just a model or two smaller than the 288, but based on the same design and come from the same family. Mine has a 17HP V-Twin and it has a 48 inch deck, no ammeter or cupholder. I mow a little over an acre with mine, and I highly recommend this mower. Most impressive thing about it is the smoothness and power in the engine. The engine runs at the same speed no matter what I am cutting, it never seems to bog down. Has a very smooth cut, and a sharp turning radius. The only bad thing that I have noticed with it, is that it is a "single track" rear end. Only one wheel provides power. If you get one off or get in a ditch, you can get stuck. One benefit of this though, that I have found, is that it would be difficult to turn the mower over. I mow on a lot of banks and hills and noticed that as you reach the point of "tipping", the upper rear wheel looses traction and you quit moving forward.
I bought mine at an auction 1 1/2 years ago and it was in prestine, almost new condition, and paid $2300 and feel I got a really good deal.

No such thing as a LX288, you mean a LX188. They were built from the early to late "90"s, think "92-"97. Good mower, used and abused one for 12 years. The V-twin Kawasaki is a hell of a good engine, the rest of our mower was junk and that engine still ran like new. Deere still uses it.
