My 730d rpms shot up when I was going down the road and would not go below 1200 rpm.I played with the adjustment and got it to idle. Now it takes very little throtle to run the rpms way up again. The gov seems to work because if I idle down to much it will pulse. I took the cover off the top of the motor and the rail seems to go back and fourth freely. The tractor also doesn't seem to sound the same. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Sounds like you threw off a govenor weight or a part thereof. It is a fairly common occurence if the engine is overspeeded.

Jon, I had a similar problem on my 730 D. Found one of the governor weights had come loose from it's swing arm. Had to replace with a new weight.

On the right hand side of the block is a hex headed plug that hold in the little rack return spring. I'd check that to make sure that spring didn't break or rust through. That's all there is to keep the rack pushed back against the throttle position finger coming from the opposite of the block from the governor.

Thanks for your reply. I already checked that spring and it looked good.

Ok...the only other thing is the other end. Could it be possible that the governor arm jumped out of the guide yoke.

If you operate the throttle lever, do you get normal operation from the governor side? I expect not. You can take that elbow shaped casting off the left side and re-set that pivot arm into the governor slot. I've herad that they can pop out of position. Then you can readjust the eccentric that is pivots on so that it has no slop.
