Hi--just got a '66 4020 diesel.Starts very easy but smokes alot both black and blue.Blue smoke very bad at all times.Engine rebuilt about 10 years ago by old guy that had it from new.I changed oil and their was nearly 2 gallons too much in the sump--no smell of diesel. Also the rocker cover vent tube had been rerouted into the in-let manifold. He said he did this before he rebuilt the engine and never put it back.I know a small bit of blue is to be expected but this fills the yard with smoke.Power seems ok but black smoke with any little pressure.

Way too much oil in the crankcase can lead to excess oil burning. Give it a little exercise with the proper oil level while watching for the oil level to change, either up or down.

Condesnation will bring up the oil level.

Rings passing combustion products and unburned fuel can bring up the oil level.

A leaking transfer pump (not all that uncommon) will add diesel to the oil.

A leaking injection pump will add diesel to the oil.

By now the transfer pump and the injection pump often have died. There's some plastic parts in the injection pump that as they crumble they block the fuel return line and upset the governor operation.

Could it be that the owner added oil to the fuel tank to provide lubricity with low sulfur fuel? Might be good to drain the tank completely and start with fresh fuel and fresh oil in the crankcase. Plan on replacing the transfer pump and having the injection pump rebuilt.

Yes but would the re-routed breather cause it ALSO.I have a day job so I dont get to work on it only at weekends,if "she who must be obeyed" let me and it wrecks my head during the week trying to figure out what to do with my limited time at the weekends. It starts very easily, doesnt appear to have diesel in the oil,it has a constsnt stream of smoke at all times, even at half rev.
Would the timing be out?
HELP----- PLEASE.hOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE TO BURN OFF OIL FROM THE AIR INTAKE/OIL OVER FILL?

Check that air intake system for any obstruction from the entrance to intake manifold. The pipes in and out of the oil bath maybe 1/2 clogged. The mesh in the aircleaner maybe bunged tight as well. Pulling the injectors and testing them is the other item on the 1st to do list. How old and skunky is the fuel? Low rpms develop less heat on the compression stroke than higher rpms. Some people take pride in operating thier equipment at idle and just above idle speeds so they don't "wear out". Overhaul to some people is a set of rings, lapping the valves and a tube of gasket making goo.

Morning John; When I bought my 3010 a few years ago,it had way too much liquid in the crankcase. It was diesel fuel. The cause was a leaking injection pump. The fellow that had it before me ran it long enough to cause some internal wear,i.e.piston rings, liners, bearings, etc.Anyway, this winter,I hope to do a complete re-build on this engine.Looking forward to seeing how much power a 3010 is supposed to have!BTW,route that breather tube the way it should be,and see if that helps the smoking part of your problem.Kenny

If you do it right and with JD parts you won't find out how much power a 3010 is suppose to have YOU will find out how much power a 3020 has as I think everything gets upgraded.

I did that (routing of breather to intake) to my 4010. It has a slight amount of crankcase blow by; just enough to drift up where you sit and annoy you.

10 years on an overhaul may mean it's time for another. Agree; over filling crankcase had to come from somewhere.

Mark
