I removed the waterpump from our Model 50 Tractor. One of the bolts twisted off so now I guess I'll have to take the radiator off so I can weld a nut on the bolt to get it out. The pulley came off pretty easy. The book calls for a snap ring. I can't find one and can't find where it is supposed to go. Of coure this is probally the first time the pump has been off the tractor, everything is rusted pretty bad, but is cleaning up pretty fair. It is a 1953 model serial No. 5015342. There appears to be a small slit in one side of the housing. Is there anything I need to watch out for or do I just put it in a press and press it out. Thanks in advance for any help. Johnny

John Deere has the parts. I had to get my 50 pump rebuilt a couple years ago. Checked with my local J.D. dealer. They rebuilt it for me for 70 bucks including parts. I thought it was worth it.

My Dad bought the tractor in 1967 and I know the waterpump has not been off since then. Thanks for the advice. I'll see what I can find in the slot.

That snap ring may be broken off in that slit.Try working some wire in the hole and see if it is free. Otherwise when pressing it apart I'd be afraid if it was still in there the housing would break.

If yours is the later style ?Which it sounds like if you have a slot in the middle. It should have one end of it sticking out. It kind of looks more like a hair pin.It may be broken off or missing ? more likly rusted off. I think the early ones had the snap ring under the pulley next to the end of the bearing.

That small slit is where the snap-ring is supposed to be. that waterpump has been off before. They won't last 50 years.

Yes, they will in reply to Maark, 05-25-2005 08:55:59
I put a water pump on my 530 in 2003. It was the FIRST time (I'm the second owner and had it since 1968) it had been repaired, so figure from 1959 to 2003 is 44 years and it's getting pretty close. My 730 pump lasted until about 2000.
