I'm about to dive into the Zenith carb on my 3020. It's been coughing and sputtering for a couple of weeks. Sometimes it won't run without the choke being out a little, other times it floods over into the air intake. Also, I have to increase the throttle very slowly or it will stumble. So far, I've got it off the tractor and 2 halves seperated. The fuel inlet screen was plugged badly. I checked the float level. It was at 1 19/32 per the IT manual. Any advice from those who have been through this? Anything to keep a sharp eye for? I have read a few of the archives. Thanks. Jim.

Be sure to replace the float needle and seat. And then make sure it closes to hold all the air pressure you can put on the line with your mouth.

If your dealer will copy the shop manual section on that carburetor you can learn many subtle details.

All the passages will need to be cleaned, even the microscopic passages.

I recently did a 3020 carb for a buddy. A few things to look for:

1 Get the carbs insides scrupulously clean! Make sure to get ALL sediment, varnish and stuff out of the bottom of the bowl. Remove all the orifices and clean the passages behind em. If necessary use soft copper wire to rod out the passages. Rinse in clean solvent then low everything out with air before reassembly.

2 Check the float for binding/rubbing on the sides of the bowl - evidenced by a shiny spot on the side the float. Tighten the pivot eyes if necessary to minimize horizontal movement of the float.

3 If theres junk in the bottom of the fuel tank it's time to remove and clean the tank. Then flush out the fuel line before reconnecting the line to the carb. If there isnt one already its a good idea to install a supplementary in-line fuel filter ahead of the carb before reconnecting.

Good luck!
