730D Thrust Washer question

Where is the location for the flywheel side thrust washer on a late year 730 Diesel electric start. Found mine disintegrated behind the flywheel. After removing the flywheel and unbolting the oil slinger housing there is a stepped spacer. My question is does the thrust washer go behind this spacer or in front of it? The spacer is tight on the crankshaft. How do I remove it if I need to? Puller?? My IT manual is not very clear on this for a learning mechanic. Thanks, John

RE my above 730 Diesel SN 7328820. I got the spacer off and figured out that the thrust washer goes behind it. Now I have another question. Is it possible to put two thrust washers in? There was so much end play that I am wondering if one will be enough. I know that my old 720 had two, but there was a metal spacer between them The 730's only call for one. Or is there some other location to take up the end play...on the clutch side perhaps? If I can put two, do I need to glue them together? Thanks for any tips on this. I have about reached my mechanical limits on this job.

John, glad you got that pesky spacer off.. I have fought with those before also..

~Don't add 2 thrust washers as it will cause you many problems as well as probably tearing at least one of them up while running.

~The late 720D & 730D is different than those 70D's & early 720D's & uses the one thrust washer on the outside then uses the position of the flywheel on the crankshaft to control crank shaft end play..

~Now here's something you aren't going to want to hear.. If that engine has been running with a lot of extra crankshaft end play there is a good chance the inside thrust washer [on the inside of the L/H main bearing housing] has moved out of position & is now chewed up.. About the only way to check that is to either pull the L/H top crankcase cover or pull the L/H main bearing housing off. [both a big job]..

~Look back here later tonight & I will post a picture here for you..

There is another thrustwasher behind the timing gear cover on the inside of the bearing. This one is probably gone. It is a job to replace. It is not the same as the outer one.
