Hi, I just brought home my first antique tractor a week ago - a 1948 B - s/n 225517. I've admired old tractors for many years, and finally decided to buy one - my wife thinks I'm nuts of course!

"B" has a home made 3pt and PowerTrol. She runs but has plently of fluid leaks, clutch is on last legs, brakes are siezed, tires are cracked and leak down, etc. I'm handy with a wrench so I'm sure I can fix it all in the long run. Over the last week have hit every rusted bolt and nut with penetrating fluid, in preperation to taking her apart. Ordered the operator, service and parts manuals too, to make restoring easier.

Planning to fix B up and give her an easy life from now on - sleep in the workshop, tow boat to the ramp a couple of times a week, toodle around our property, etc.

Amazing how much I've learnt by reading past posts here and on johnnypopper.com - you guys are great!

Keith - Houston, TX area.

That tractor looks great ! Your wife should of seen some of the gems I have dragged home.(tractors) Also tell her that at least she will know where you are. Out in the garage working on the tractor and not down at the bar pickin up girls.

Besides they make new women every day,but the're not makeing anymore 2 cyl's. LOL

Mike, I can't resist - Did you want us to look at the tractors or women you have dragged home? I presume it is the former. Keith, I would say you have done very well on your first tractor purchase. You have a lot better idea of what they are like when you see them in their working clothes. That applies equally well to both of the previously mentioned species.

Right now I'm down to 13 tractors and still 1 woman. 2 if you count putting up with my daughter. And For certain the tractors are a whole lot less problems.

Just want to emphasize that you have made a reasonable purchase. Things that I see include -
tires hold air well enough to transport, grills as nice as those are uncommon, the B's didn't get abused as bad as the A's or G's which got fastened to anything a chain would fit (i.e.-the cultivator depth levers - means lighter duty), paint seems uniform - not several wrecks pieced together and from general appearances the previous owners thought enough of it to let it sleep in a shed when not in use.

Congrats Keith.

Our neighbor farmed 240 acres with 2 "B"s, and my uncle kept 160 acres of dairy farming going in Ohio with a '48 "B" adding a '51 "A" later on. Those are tough old machines, very simple and rugged, but not to be considered unrefined. They will run almost forever as long as you repair them back to their rather generous specifications, but specifications they do indeed have.

You're hooked now!

Congratulations Keith on your 2 babies. I know you will have lots of fun with both of them and as the little fellow gets older im sure u both will appreciate the green one. If u look at my handle i have 2 of the h and one each of the other. It is real fun getting them restored and im sure u will feel the same about your B. Have fun and enjoy.

Congrats on the new tractor and baby. I have really enjoyed working on my first tractor the last few months. My wife thinks I'm nuts too. Of couse she thought that even before I bought the tractor.
