I want to buy a John Deere utility tractor in the 30 hp range. Need a front-end loader and 4 wheel drive. Have looked at the 950 and 1050, which I like. Have about $7,000 to spend (I know - not enough, but I am hoping). Any suggestions on other models to look at?

I'm looking too and of course there are more projects here than money as well. The 2155/2355/2555 MFWD are in such demand it's cheaper accordingly to look at the new 990/4310/5105. The 5105/5205 MFWD with a 541 loader looks pretty good for the money, has a warrenty and havn't been pre abused.

You're looking at good tractors. The 950 and 1050 are really good little tractors, but if there is any way the budget will stand for it, try to move up to their updated versions, the 970 or 1070. They are greal little tractors. About 15 years ago Deere was importing three bigger, little known but darned good tractors from Yanmar in Japan (also the source of the 950/70 and 1050/70) called the 1250, 1450 and 1650. As I recall they were 40, 50 and 60 hp, respectively. The 1250 is 3-cylinder, the 1450 is 4-cylinder and the 1640 is a 4-cylinder turbo engine. Of the trio, I'd suggest the 1450. They have no synchronization at all in the transmission, but you just might get into one for your $7,000 range. Do stick to your front wheel drive goal.
