Hello, I have a 58 JD 530 and I have a couple of questions. When iding there is a small amount of black smoke, if you crack the throttle a little the smoke will clear up....what is the proper carb adjustment? Also when the live PTO pedal is disengaged there is a slight "growl" at an idle...it seems to go away when the rpms increase....is this normal? And sometimes when the tractor goes from no-load to a load (ie flat ground to small hill) the engine will miss a fire when the governor kicks in. I plan on doing a tune-up, I am hoping this along with a carb adjustment will fix it. Any help would be appreciated. Jon

I have noticed that slight growl in other tractors. Check and make sure the pto oil and trans. oil are not mixing. I run Hy-Gard in my pto. There's lots of adjustments on that carb. and linkage. Got an I&T book ? It covers them. I think it also tells about setting those idle mixture screws by shorting out one cyl. at a time and adjusting each cyl. to idle at the same RPM. As part of a good tune up adjust the valve clearance and check the compression too.

Mike, Thanks for the help. I adjusted the pto clutch a couple of weeks ago....when I pulled the inspection cover off I was surprised with a couple of gallons of gear lube. I just figured the previous owner filled the pto with gear lube. I will need to check to see if it fills up again. What kind of job is required to fix that if trans lube is in fact getting the the pto housing? Thanks agian. -Jon

Did you try to drain out the gear lube and put in a lighter oil ? 10W ? This may help, that gear lube is too slipery and will harm the facings. To fix this you will need to pull the whole rockshaft housing off the back of the tractor to get at the seals on the inside. Your first time it is a major job,not bad after you have done a few,but still a pain.
