If you use one of these early balers with the closed throat, you need to make sure that you bale DRY hay. Wet or damp hay has a tendency to wrap around the rollers in the throat.

Most of the 510s I see go for around 3000USD or less.

Personally I'd stay away from this one if you can find something with an open throat design.

Rodney / Walter,

Can you explain what you mean by open and close throat?

I have a JD 330, is that open or close?

I know that I can bale all day without problems. In the evening when it starts to get dark and the hay starts to get tough and go into case, it will wrap around my crimping roller and I am done. But I should have stopped baling 30 minutes before and I was pushing it.

I believe (not a round baler user myself...just passed on what my uncle told me) that if the windrow of hay can go directly from the pickup to the rolling mechanism (belts, chain, or rollers) without passing through some other rollers or feeding mechansim, that it would be considered an open throat.

Sounds like you have a closed throat, as it is that crimping roller that ends up getting rolled up with hay if the hay is too damp.

I while back I considered buying a JD 510 because they were so cheap...my uncle made it clear to me to stay away from them unless I wanted trouble baling.

If you you ever used one of those closed throat pluging-up things they called a baler you could figure the value real quick.
