John T - I think I have read on here where you might have a wiring diagram for a 70 Diesel. Trying to get one of my students fixed up before school gets out. Can you help me out?

Ben....what did you find out on the "shorted coil"? If you get the wiring diagrams, but still have questions..send me an e-mail and I will give you a copy of my "laymans cheat sheet" about wiring 70D's. I usually start at the voltage regulator and string wires to the back of the dash and go from there. The back of the dash has alot of wires. Most common problems on the 70D's is that the fuel gauge "rocker switch" does not work and the contacts in the main switch are corroded. Later

I have checked continuity between the coil leads and the iron core and there is none so I assume the coil is not shorted. I am still having the heat problem. I have wired the the ignition switch up like the parts book shows and I am still getting 6 volts to the distributor terminal. If I understand you guys right it should be close to 4.5 volts. Is that correct? Would this mean the ignition switch is faulty?

The voltage will not drop to 4.5 until the engine is running. I had the same question with my 80.

Ben...on the back side of the switch you should have a terminal marked "ign" and one marked "res". There should be a resistor running between those two terminals then the wire to the coil box should be connected to the "res" terminal on the switch. You should have 6 volts when the starter is cranking the engine and then it should drop down to the lower voltage when the engine is running.

Ben, the only ones I have are those in SM 2029 and they're very generic for both the 70 and 720 with pony starts, if Mr. Schwieberts diagrams dont work, out e mail me at [email protected] and I can return e mail you that one.
