3020 Reverse Won't Stay In Gear

I need help with a 3020 with Syncro Range Tranny. The problem I am having is the only way I can get it to stay in reverse is pull back on the lever and it still pops out some times. The shifter is adjusted as far as it can be. The forward gears all work fine except the higher gears in each range seem to be out of alignment but once you find it stays in gear fine. Any ides would be greatly appreciated cause I don"t know where to go from here.

I've not been the synchro transmission and don't plan to, but from scanning the TM on the 4020, I'd look at the detent assemblies and the end play on the shifter cams. They interact and interact with the starter safety switch.

Maybe the adjustment is too" back"Disconnect the shifter rod and place the lever in reverse.Jiggle the lever to be sure the detent is in place and try it that way.If it works then adjust the shifter rod to where the pin is a slip fit.

just took a 3010 apart with same problem.the end of the countershaft was broken off at the rear bearing.hope yours is simpler than mine.

I know it is not any major damage in the tranny because I was just in there to change speed range shifter cam which was busted. I am assuming the adjustment on the shifter is to take up wear on the synchronizer disks. Which station would you recomend trying to adjust it for reverse? If I can"t adjust it out what would be the culprit?

The syncronizers or drums can have wear in them that without proper specs. and tools can be difficult to determine.What do you think caused the speed range shifter cam to break??Tx Jim

I would suspect on the cam shifter breaking is by holding it in reverse like you have to right now to get it to move in reverse. That is the problem working on something that you do not know the history of how or why it broke. What would you recommend on replacing if I split this tractor again? If I have to go in there again want to replace all of the narmal wear items and get it over with. The machine has 5300hrs logged on it and runs great otherwise.

Rebuild/relace all the synchros on the top shaft of the trans while it is out. Might also pay to rebuild the shifter and then set it to spec. Trying to adjust the shift linkage to override a synchro problem usually does more harm than good.Even with new synchros the shifter has to be tight with no slop in the gates and linkage and adjusted properly or you risk taking out a synchro again.
