My problem is that I must hold the shift lever in 6th and 8th to keep it in gear. It seems to run great and does not make any unusual sounds in the trans after I hold it in gear. The other gears work fine.

Very likely the shift linkage is worn and not getting it all the way into gear. Its a cam operation so it should stay in gear. I don't know how much adjustment on the linkage there is, but there surely is some. I've not had to deal with that yet. Yesterday the three point control cable froze up and I couldn't lift the sprayer high enough to go over the tongue of the field cultivator. But a few hours with the operator platform off and a new cable and that works like it should and I covered a field with fertilizer worked in before dark.

I do have a shop manual on the early (not side console) 4020 which may have some hints on your shifting problem. It may be that the later 4020 is different though, they have totally different manuals, shop manuals, and parts books.
