I have a good little M that starts and runs perfectly, but the exhaust pipe which appears to be new gets a whole lot hotter than my B does. The block does not get hot to the touch and the water is of course hot but does not seem to be too hot. Just wandering if maybe I might have a problem???

While a timing check would be a good idea what you describe I will say is totally normal. Those little M's engines run hot and that exhaust will heat up real fast. Mow with one at night and the whole muffler glows. I have not had B's run anywhere near this hot,the exhaust has more of a chance to cool off I think. Run any upright 2 cyl. with out a muffler and they are twice as loud as any B without one.

Our 40 did the same thing. Timing it according to the book's directions for static timing made it start and behave very well but it always had a hot muffler & a rather harsh bark. Somebody had put springs in the distributor that were way too strong. Fixing the advance mechanism allowed advance to the spark mark, mellowed his voice a lot, lowered the exhaust temp and he burns less gas. Now we have to put a bag over the grille or run the daylights out of it to get the temp gauge to move at all even in summer.

Check the fast idle timing with a timing light! At fast idle you should see the spark mark in the timing hole. It should return to near 0* maybe even a bit after by the time you reduce engine speed to slow idle.

CAUTION.... Don't just move the distributor to the spark mark at fast idle! If the advance mechanism is the actual cause of your trouble, doing so may give you an early spark at cranking speed causing hard starting. If you fix it this way and you hand crank it YOU WILL GET KICKED!

Late ignition timing and/or a lean fuel mixture will contribute to hotter exhaust, as well as cam timing of a tooth or so.
