Hello, I have a JD 50 with a narrow front that doesn't have power steering, I was wondering if power steering could easily be added?.
thank you

Jonathan, yes, P/S can be added but it is really quite a job. The fan shaft & tube, P/S pump, front bolster, steering shaft, hydraulic lines, all has to be added , then the fan to governor gear lash & heel adjustment set [not an easy job]..

~I have done a few P/S conversions & buying a running tractor with a GOOD WORKING P/S unit is the way to go.. Then install the old manual steering parts on the P/S donor tractor & sell the donor.. If you buy right the cost will be minimal..

~If you are just looking for easier steering?.. fill the steering gear with a mixture of 140 weight gear oil & slick 50 grease, then buy a 4 spoke larger diameter steering wheel from a manual steering Deere 70 tractor. Just that large 4 spoke steering wheel alone can make quite a difference..

thanks, I guess I'm going to leave it as is. I thought I might look into it and if the job was as easy as picking up and installing a couple parts off Ebay I'd do it.

That 50 should steer as easy as a "B"... Unless you have a loader on it or a mounted corn Picker, I don't see where you would really need power steering.. Are you sure the oil levels and grease fittings are serviced..??

I would like to use mine in the woods for gathering sap etc... so power steering would be nice.
thanks

Depends on what you want and how much you are willing to pay. At one time two co's had kits so PS could be added to tractors without PS. I think some of the parts that Char Lynn had in there kit is still avaiable, but the complete kits are not. It would take a trip to a junk yard to try and find one of those kits, or to find a junked 50 and get the whole works off the junker. And if the trantor is junk, is the power steering junk also? It may take alot of JD parts to get the junker JD PS to work. Can it be done? Yes. Is it cost effective? Thats up to you. It would't be cost effective to me. I would think it would be cheeper to sell yours and go get a 50 already with PS.
