I'M TRYING TO REMOVE THE STARTER ON A MODEL A SERIAL # 703220 TO REPLACE THE MECHANICAL SWITCH. IS THERE ANY WAY TO GET THE STARTER OUT WITHOUT DISASSEMBLING IT IN PLACE. THERE IS APPRX 2.5" BEHIND THE STARTER AND THE HOUSING AROUND THE GEAR DRIVE END OF THE STARTER (THE PORTION OF THE STARTER THAT EXTEND OUT PAST THE FRAME) IS APPRX 3" LG. I HAVE GOT ALL THE MOUNTING BOLTS LOOSE AND CAN WIGGLE THE STARTER BUT I CANT SEE ANYWAY TO GET IT OUT WITHOUT TOTALLY DISASSEMBLING IN PLACE AND THEN THAT MIGHT NOT WORK. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANKS

THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR IDEAS. ONCE I REMOVED THE STARTER LEAD I WAS ABLE TO ROLL THE STARTER RIGHT OUT, SOMETIMES ALL YOU NEED IS ANOTHER SET OF EYES.

It will come out ! I just had the starter out of my '51 . Getting it back in is almost harder , the actuating arm needs to be pulled up to get the starter back in place . I put a long piece of wire on the arm and ran the other end up through the actuating arm hole first , so i could pull it up to get the starter back in .Hope this helps . george

Kevin, after everything is unhooked, pull starter away from flywheel and rotate so that the cutout portion of the nose is facing down and it will come right out. Be ready, it's a lot heavier than it looks!

You also have to disconnect the battery cable at the starter. Remove battery ground first(!!!) as well as the actuating rod(?). I then get underneath, fold my knees up under the starter. Your knees will support the weight. while you manipulate the starter with your hands. Reverse the technique for installing it. Nature also helps at 6', 187# and 7 decades.

Kevin:

You just have to be patient. It will come out as long as you have the starter rod unhooked and the three bolts out. Wiggle, wiggle, twist, twist, roll, wiggle, twist.

When it does, be ready for that weight when it hits you on the chest!

Been there done that!

Oh, and it helps if you mumble the right words and hold your tongue in just the right position.

Frank
