First Reduction Gear Cover - '39 B

I am working on a '39 "B" - serial no. 75600. The Fist Reduction Gear Cover part # is B148R.

In regard to the center hole which accepts the bearing which in turn supports the end of the transmission drive gear/first reduction gear - a bushing has been pressed in and it accepts the bearing. In removing the cover, the bushing and bearing came out of the bore.

Is this a repair or did this cover come with a bushing installed?

The NO. 49-R catalog (published in 1940) indicates that B148R was a substitute for B1688R. I was not able to find this bushing in either of my parts manuals. Parts Catalog PC330 indicates the correct cover is B1688R or B1858R.

Any help in clarifying this situation will be appreciated.

Hi Ken,
JD had problems with bearings spinning in the first reduction gear cover and the magneto end of the governor shaft in the governor box, and wallowing out the holes, leading to slop in the shafts. Several companies (Woodring and Wise, TISCO, Sestak and Winning) sold kits which consisted of a cutting tool, line-up device, and bushings to overcut the worn bearing hole and insert a bushing, into which the bearing would fit. I have a couple of the kits, and I think they were rather commonly used to save buying a new first reduction gear cover or governor box, particularly during the war.

On all those covers the bearing just fit in a hole bored in the cover. It should have a snap ring to hold it into position. Someone along the line must of had the bushing installed due to wear. If it still fits good you should be able to hold the bushing in place with some loctite.
