The other day I brush hogged for quite a few hours with my JD2030. I stopped to re-fuel and I could not get the independent PTO to re-engage. All I heard was a slight "whurring" sound coming from the transmission. I tried a few more times while driving it back to park it, but nothing! I even tried again yesterday, hoping that it might work. No such luck!! There's nothing binding up the mower - I checked. Has anyone had a similar experience and some thoughts on repairing it? Thank You!

I assume you have checked the main pto handle on the side of the trans case ,,, I've seen people kick these out of gear with their foot by accident, and then of course your independent control lever will not work

first thing to do is to disconnect the pto driveshft and try to rotate the pto shaft by hand (ENGINE OF!!!).
if it turns freely, something is broken in the pto train, if you feel resistance, check pto lever and fork: do you feel difference in pto lever movement? if there is any suspicion
remove the sheet metal cover from the shift lever cover, remove the two bolts that hold the lever assembly to the shift cover and carefully lift the assembly (pto lever should be in the off position!!) and check the fork that activates the valve. if ok install it back and check pressures: there is a plug on the right edge of the shift lever cover. remove the plug and connect a pressure gauge capable of reading 110 psi. (it's 3/8 nf thread). start the engine, gauge should read about 110 psi at hi rpm. shold be about 100 in low rpm. check with pto on and off in low rpm.
if there is a pressure drop in the pto on position, there is probably an internal leak that causes the pto clutch to slip.
if you don't see meaningful pressure changes, you can check pressure at the pto clutch and brake individually:
there are two plugs on the top of the shift lever cover, one for pto clutch pressure and one for pto brake pressure. connect your pressure gauge instead of these plugs one at a time and check the pressures: one port should read 0 when pto is off and 110 psi when pto is on. the other should read 110 psi with pto off (brake position) and 0 with pto on.
if pressures are right there is probably a mechanical problem within the tractor.
