Paint problem???

I restored my JD 2 1/2" RC 1501 hydraulic cylinder (with lots of help from this board, thanks) and am having a problem with keeping paint on the outside adjustable stop rods. It is a tight fit and I cleaned the inside where the rod goes into about as best as anyone could short of using a reamer. I used Dupont 615+620 self etching primer followed by 2 coats of Imron. The rods don't really scratch much paint off until I bolt them to the stop. The rods aren't bent and once the paint is scraped off to metal the rods slide in and out easily. Any ideas? Origionally, they were painted with JD green with no primer from the factory but that paint had lead in it.

If the factory even painted them at all they would of barely even dusted them color and NO PRIMER just like the tractors. It sounds like you have way to many layers of too good of paint.

a couple of things to say about this, first, you don't get max adheasion until 7-10 days after the paint has dried, second there needs to physically be room for the rod with paint on it to get thru or it will scrape off, also be sure the surface is very clean before you paint so you don't hinder adheasion from surface contamination, last, you need a barrier between the 615 and the imron, the 615 has a lot of acid and will not adheare to topcoat without a barrier like primer or sealer. also you can get industrial Imron that will go direct to metal without primer if you need to.
