Is there any other place with the serial # on this tractor? I know it is a 1940 H and the serial # starts with 179

jr55, how do you know the first three digits are 179? Is this been told to you, or -- do you have a serial tag that is only partly readable? That tag should be aluminum, and unless it has been removed or mutilated, it should be readable in some way. JD started using steel serial tags as a result of aluminum shortages during the war, but this came long after the 1940 JD H's. If, on the other hand, you have a steel plate - - - you don't have a '40 model H. (PatB)

The tag is on it but in bad shape. I posted a post on this sight a while back with the serial # to find out the year. I don't know how to find that post now. The tag was readable but the guy that sandblasted it messed it up. It was covered but it blew off and he hit it before he knew it.

Hi jr55;

Shoot me an e-mail on your serial tag grief when you have a chance. (PatB)

Wow! What a misfortune. All may not be lost here. That tag just may be readable from the back but you will have to remove the tag to do this. Here's an excerpt from a book I am writing that may help you,

"A conservative method of removing a serial plate is a two-step process demanding patience & persistence. You will need a rather dull, but evenly so, chisel and a ball peen hammer, and a nice new, sharp vice grip wrench, small to medium size. Place the dull chisel against the rivet head & give it a gentle rap. Then move to the opposite side of the rivet head and gently rap it again. Now take the vice grip wrench and nip onto the rivet head & gently back it out. If you hit too hard with the hammer, you are prone to shear the head off. If you don't have discernable movement on the first vice grip try, apply the chisel & hammer treatment again, then retry the vice grip wrench. Reinstall with replacement rivets from your John Deere parts supplier."

Pat; Good luck with the book. It may not be a bad idea to add this fellows tag delema under reasons not to sand blast your main case. I read here awhile back of someone using a dremal tool with a narrow cutoff wheel to cut a screw driver slot in those rivet heads then back them out with a screw driver. Sounds like a good enough idea. I haven"t had need to try it yet. If you got an old case laying around might be worth a try and if it works good make mention of it in your book also.

jr55, if you are asking about locations other than the serial number plate for the serial number of the tractor, the answer is no. The only place a serial number shows on this model is the serial number plate itself.

Use caution with the serial number/model year list shown in this website, because it is incorrect (at least for the H). It reflects the old John Deere list that was determined to be incorrect. Unfortunately, many of those old, incorrect lists are still floating around. Green Magazine, Two Cylinder, and even Deere, have published lists considered accurate. All those lists currently show the beginning serial numbers as follows:
1939 - 1000
1940 - 10000
1941 - 20615
1942 - 35699
1943 - 44754
1944 - 45642
1945 - 47796
1946 - 53327
1947 - 58614

The plate is the only place you will find the serial number
