Was moving the tractor the other day and the gear shift suddenly came unhooked in the shift quadrant. Pulled the top off and discovered that the keeper had broken off the lower portion of the shifter shaft( presume that it kept the shifter at the proper length for engaging the shifting forks). That's been replaced but I have questions on the shifting forks. There are 4 of them total. Only the one furthest to the rear of the tractor slides on it's shaft about 1 inch. The other 3 do not move at all. 1st question.. Am I stuck in between 2 gears? and what alignment of these forks will it take to reassemble the gear shift properly. Was hoping to drive in a St Pat's day parade this Thursday. Any help is appreciated.

I have had that happen before but mine were actually rusted to the shaft. I take it thats not your problem. I also have a "51 that does that sometimes. What I would do is have someone behind the tractor rock it, while you try to move the quadrants into their proper location to get back to neutral. Thats the first thing I would try. These transmissions are not that complex, so I don"t think it would take much to get right! Good luck

What is the correct pattern for the tractor to be in neutral. Is it when all the shifting forks are lined up in the center of the shafts? thanks
