Question on JD A block

Our HS Ag Dept/FFA bought a '49 A with a bad block. Found a "good" block which was bored .045" over. As the tractor had been at the salvage yard for a while, we'll need to hone some rust off of the cylinder walls.

How much can we safely take off the walls to get a smooth surface. i.e. can we take the things down to .048" over or .055" over and still be OK?

Thanks for any and all help

You can safely bore that block up to .125 and not have to sleeve it, pistons are readily available in .045, .090 and .125 over.
Hope this will help you.

IMHO, in general, I think it's best to remove as LITTLE as possible. For show or parade use, light rust pits won't bother, just get rid of the worst of the surface rust.

If it's going to be worked hard, or you want a perfect job, boring or boring and sleeving would be best, but for light use, it will be fine with some pits. If you hone it too much, to get rid of all the pits, you will have a large piston ring gap, and a loose piston, likely to "slap", and have excessive blow-by, and either of those problems will be worse than doing a light honing and leaving it.
