a battery by itself does not have a "ground side". the ground only comes into being after you connect a cable from the tractor's frame to a post of the battery. either post of the battery can be connected to the tractor frame and everything will be correct if all other wiring is made for that polarity. probably a more correct term for ground is to call it the "common" side.

Alvin, it came from the factory wired with the battery + to ground, but many got accidentaly changed over the years. Many VR"s are bi polar and will work either way, while some will not and may suffer eventual harm (contacts burned) if ran reversed. If you wanna go back to its original Positive ground, wire her up, reverse the ammeter leads if necessary due to it reading bass ackwards, then POLARIZE by first dead grounding the Gens Field post to its case, then momentarily flash jump a wire from the VR"s BAT terminal over to its ARM (or GEN) terminal and you ought to get a small spark.

Post back any questions, Good Luck n God Bless

Alvin, yes the pos terminal should be hooked to ground. You probably haven't hurt anything, just change your cables, polarize your system, and it should start charging. {Unless it has been converted to alternator in which case there may be a problem.}
