Is Classic John Deere Green paint in a rattle can the same color as Classic John Deere Green paint in a quart can? The reason I am asking, I did some painting with Classic John Deere Green paint with a Napa hardner and the Classic John Deere Green paint in a rattle can looks a little darker. Thanks!!

I would suspect the hardener as I was under the impression that you could not go back and just spray over top of paint with hardener in it. Over the 20 + years I have used John Deere brand paint they have had very good match between cans, rattle cans, and even the touch up markers. This usually only is for amounts bought within the same time period 1 or so years ? Because over those 20 + years JD has changed suppliers and colors and types of paint I'm guessing at least 4 to 5 or more times I have seen major changes. I would much rather take my chances on JD paint matching for touch up years from now than I would NAPA or other brands mixed paint matching a week or maybe even a day from now.

I have painted many tractors for hire, some farm some collector. This may not seem obvious to many but this is an apples to oranges situation. All you have the same here is the color on the can. The propellant, fluid transfer volume, pattern, and the ratio of hardner, thinner[reducer], and or lack thereof all alter the final outcome. Did you apply the same number of coats with the same thickness by each method? Did you paint each the same day? Now you have humidity and temperature and color fade added to the mix. You have a beautiful 69 Z-28 or maybe a roadrunner just painted from a gallon can would you really expect a rattle can job to flawlessly blend in here of course not and tractor painting is no different.

It sounds like you have loads of experience in professional painting, unlike me. I'm wanting to refurbish my JD compact tractor and in such, have run into a derth of piant information that leaves me clueless. Please, would you be able to provide me with the most accurate info on matching John Deere Green and yellow paint? I have a buddy who has professionally sprayed in the past and still owns his air compressor, gun, etc. I was asked to chase up the "paint codes" and he'll do the rest.

John, I had to same problem. JD 50 professionally prepped and painted with JD Classic Green and harder. Then before mounting the JD 45 loader, I sanded it down to bare, prime it with same type of primer, but from a rattle can. Then painted it with Classic Green from a rattle can. Now there could be other variables, like the metal itself, but the loader came out noticably darker than the tractor.

John, I've had excellent results with JD's aerosol Classic Green along with the regular Classic Green with SYNTHO 8010 hardener from NAPA. I haven't encountered the issue you bring up. But then, there was definite demarcation between where I used these two. I would never, ever expect to be able to apply aerosol Classic Green over an area previously painted with JD Classic Green w/hardener without the consequence of it being obvious -- at least for a while. Perhaps after a few more curing days it will blend in better. I don't believe you'll get quite the shine with the rattle can paint as with the sprayed paint with hardener. BTW, what ratio were you advised to use between paint-reducer-hardener? I use 8:2:1 usually. And that's an 8:1 ratio between paint & hardener -- does the trick here.

I have a tractor and impliment color selector, when it came to John Deere we contacted the company Richard Gast told us (Dupont) there is NO one color green, it is an "eyeball match" because of all the different substraits used like metal, plastic, powder ect. the greens do vary but when you do a complete tratcor and the color is not exact you don't notice the color difference, plus when each different paint manufactuer makes the paint it could vary also, so to answer your question, Yes it probably is darker

I probably shouldn't even be replying to this, as I am the furthest from knowledgeable about paint! But, I have been told that the classic green (and perhaps any other color?) has more shine to it if hardener has been added. Maybe that's the difference you're seeing?
