We are looking for a site that could describe the differences between a 4000 and a 4020. Any other info would be greatly apperciated. Does any one know of any 4000's for sale. Thanks for your help!

The main differences are a 4000 will nnot have rockshaft covers, 3 point arms are square tubes instead of cast, and the rear axles are smaller dia. like a 4010. No battery boxes either.
Most did not have diff. lock although it could be ordered with it and they did not come with a 1000rpm shaft, although you can put one in just like a 4020. Engine and transmissions were the same as a same year 4020. I have a 72 4000 power-shift and had a 72 synchro 5 yrs ago. Hated to sell it but needed the money.
This site will also explain the diffs.

450 C : Approx. 8000 4000 where made unlike the famous 4020 which can be found in any farm auction, and are fairly collectible 4000 Gas P/S is a good one. The JD 4000 is 96 hp where as the 4020 is 94 hp,the 4000 doesn't have the sheet metal around hydraulic housing and the battiers are exposed whereas the 4029 is inclosed also the 4000 has the same lift arms as a 3020 which are a little light duty, some people like to tell that the 4000 is nothing but a 3020 with a six cylinder engine, that is not so I have a 71,and a 72 and the 4020 and 4000 are in the same parts manuel which looks like a big telephone directory,if you can find a issue of Green Magazine Aug. 1996 it will help you. thanks Gman

My uncle owns the last of 9 72 4000 gas powershifts built. Bought it new in 1972 from Todd Tractor in Seneca KS.
