My 7510 has a 6-414 engine, its basically a punched out version of the old 404 from the sixties and seventies. Should be able to find one in bone yards, any model 7200 series on up.

The 6-414 definately is not an up-bored 6-404. The 414 is a Dubuque built JD 300 Series ingine, an increased displacement version of the 303, 329 and to a large degree the 359 while the 404 is a Waterloo built JD 400 Series engine. The 404 is the predicessor of the 466 and now the 8.1 liter..

Didn't Mother Deere find some way to stretch that 400 series block from it's origonal 389 to 9.0L which is about 495 cu"?

The 8.1 liter is 496 cubic inches. The new 6090 engine will be right at 550 cubic inches. And yes, that's pretty darn impressive for an engine foundation laid down 40+ years ago.

Didn't the six cylinder 400 Series start at something like 362 cu. in. gas engine in the 4010? So far as I know, the 8.1 liter (494 cu. in.) is as far as it has been stretched.

Deere will be introducing a new 9.0-liter (6090) engine later this year, and it is based on the current 6081 architecture. It will be a 4-valve engine and use the high-pressure common-rail injection now found on the 6081. It will also have all the emissions goodies such as EGR to meet the newest emissions requirements. It's my understanding that the EGR is the main reason they stretched it to 9 liters. Approximately 20% of the exhaust gases will be recirculated into the engine to be burned again, necessitating more displacement. At least that's the info I got from our Deere AMPS rep yesterday, after he had attended a school on the new engine. He also said it would be introduced in conjunction with a new 8000 Thirty series tractor, replacing the current 8000 Twenty series that is now Deere's top of the line in row-crops.

My memory isn't what it used to be, but i don't recall this engine ever being put in a green tractor. It was made only at Dubuque and Dubuque used it in many models of yellow equipment. It's very similar to the 6-329 or 6-359, but the deck height of the block is higher, thus the engine is taller. It's the 6 cylinder version of the 4-276 which was used in ag tractors.

From what I can find it was used in generators and industrial applications like your excavator, motorgraders and power units.
