Got my old B running good and then found that my fuel filter was stopping up with rust from the tank. From looking in there it is not real bad but does need cleaned. What do you suggest???

Hey 5th wheel,
I have a 51 B with the same problem but I am not yet ready to restore the tractor so I pulled out the sediment bowl and went to the local farm&Home and bought a eighth inch pipe nipple that is 1and1/2 inches long and an eighth pipe tap and tapped the id of the sediment bowl and screwed in the pipe nipple so that I am never drawing off of the bottom of the tank and have not plugged any thing up since and the ole girl has several hours on it...let me know if you have any questions....

Assuming that the tank is generally in pretty good shape, you can coat the inside with a special sealant that seals off leaks from pinholes etc. This sealant is also good at sealing off minor surface rust that can accumulate in the filter.

Most motorcycle shops sell this stuff. I use a 3 part process called "Kreem". I've done a couple of tanks so far with good results.

Pull the tank off and put a small chain it and shake. Rinse it out after and most of the junk will wash out.

i concur with Will P. but i would just take it one step further and once i had all the crap out, i would seal the tank so this problem never happens again. i would also inspect the exterior of the tank, especially the top, to make sure there aren't any rust holes than have formed in between the hood and tank. now would be the time to fix that too. just my two cents.

See tractor photos of how bad a gas tank can get on a john deere. I did repair this tank. Russ

There is a good chance that the top of the tank rusted out from the outside in. I'd pull the hood off pull out the tank and clean it up and check it out and fix it or replace it if needed.
