It"s time to get all your paperwork together and ask the service manager to arrange a meeting between you and the territory service rep.Deere is very aware of the short comings of this series and it is well documented at all levels. Explain your case to the rep. Don"t yell, don"t threaten, simply explain the hours, the usage, what you expected when buying the DEERE name, and be willing to work with them a little. You are out of warranty, but I have seen the rep allow anything from full repair, to a 50/50 split, to a 1/3 1/3 1/3 split between you, the dealer and DEERE. If the service maniger won"t help contact, go to the owner or the salesman. If all esle fails, go around the dealer and ask DEERE themselves to make the arrangements, but you"ll have better luck if you involve the dealer, as he will be the one doing the repair. GOOD LUCK!

The first time it went out ( about 60 hrs. )
I paid for the labor and Deere paid for the parts. Cost me close to $ 1000.00. Now that its gone out again in less than a year with just a few hours on it don"t know how its going to come out. Guess it depends on how good, or how interested J. Deere is in solving the problem. It"s a great small tractor except for this problem

Turns out that the transaxles in the 42/43 and 4400 weren"t the greatest ideas ever hatched up within Deere. The other 4000"s stuck with Yanmar (Kanzaki) sourced transmissions which Deere has used in compact utility and 5000 Series tractors for many, many years. Now, with the latest updates of the 4000 Series tractors, it looks to me like they"ve finally changes these models back to the Yanmar (Kanzaki) transaxles. I fully realize it"s tough medicine but I"d recommend the fix of trading out of the 4200 to another model with a good transaxle or to a new one with a good transaxle.

Thank you all very much for the info. This 4200 only had 60 hours the first time it went out, now in less than a year and only a few more hours it is out again. It's only used to cut grass, and light use with the bucket. The warranty is out due to the number of months I've had the tractor. But feel the transmission should be going out twice with less than 80 hours.

The 4000 series hydro transmission had problems according a salesman. They made some changes on the transmission from the prior models and it came back to haunt them to the point that some rental yards said if they didn't fix them they would look else where for future tractors.

How many hours on the tractors and what is it being used for? Do you have all the paperwork from the first repair? I ran into this on my car. The factory rebuilt three transmisisons. The dealer said I was driving too agressive. After warrenty on 2nd rebuild out of my pocket I as told the same thing at the local trans shop. The shop foreman was told to put a pressure gauge on the transmission and make certain the apply pressure wasn't the cause of slipping and burned clutches. Duh, there is a pattern here you know. The forewman tried to tell me there could be no pressure problem, everything had been checked. Shortly afterwards he was convinced to take five minutes and check the pressures. Turned out the factory had installed the wrong springs in the pump and valve body causing low apply pressure and slippage.
