I use a JD 40 to cultivate with a 2-row cultivator in vegetables. I don't have any way to stabilize the cultivator. What can I do to keep it from swinging so? Modify some old sway blocks? Use stabilizing bars? Chains with turn-buckles? What have you all used?

On rearmount cultivators there is a blade that runs in the ground to keep the sway out and if you put something on the tractor to stop the sway you will bust something, used a lot of both front and rear mount and if you want good control get s set of front mounts

I have several of these sway "yokes" for Dubuque cultivating tractors. I might be willing to part with one. Send me any email @ [email protected] if you are interested.

You need a sway yoke that attaches to the tractor and then goes to the rear cultivator. It looks like a large tunning fork. The equipment being used has to have a vertical slot for the tongue to fit through.
You should be able to find one at a salvage yard.

Alan,

If you are using a culitvator on your 3-point hitch, tightening it up is the last thing you want.

It has got to be able to "sway" back there or every little, tiny movement of the tractor is gonna make the cultivator "jerk" sideways. Leave it loose so that the tractor can "wander around" and you don't have to steer like walking a tightrope.

The key to cultivating with a rear mounted unit is to make the cultivator lateraly stable, not the tractor.

I know this is way bigger unit than what you are using, but this cultivator shows a blade type stabilizer out on the forward end of the bar. John Deere used to make a "knife" type stabilizer too and they worked ver well, running two to three inches deep.

I think you are talking about the cultivators that are in the rear of the tractor. If so, you are probably missing a part. There is a part that attaches and prevents the swing of cultivators in the rear.
